The Traditional Council of NdiichIe (Chiefs)

The  Ndichie  or the Traditional Council of Chiefs directly support the monarch. They are appointed by the Obi, but only after careful consultation to ensure balance, equity, and competence within the Council. The traditional chieftaincy system in Onitsha, as established by its ancestors, comprises 52 positions, categorized into three tiers:

  1. Ndichie Ume (1st Class): 6 positions
  2. Ndichie Okwa (2nd Class): 23 positions
  3. Ndichie Okwareze (3rd Class): 23 positions

Onitsha does not award honorary chieftaincy titles.

In modern times, these chieftains have evolved to assume key roles in:

  • Providing political leadership
  • Administering traditional justice within their respective kindred groups and villages on behalf of the king

To ensure effective governance, the king convenes regular monthly meetings with the Traditional Council, supplemented by impromptu consultations as needed.
