Otu Odu

The Otu Odu society is a prestigious institution in Onitsha and is considered the most esteemed title for Onitsha women. As a social entity, the society is highly revered and regarded as the female equivalent of the Agbalanze. Members of the society are prominent in women’s affairs and are distinguished by their ivory ornaments on their wrists and ankles.

The society’s history dates back to the early days of Onitsha, but it was formally established in 1959 by the then Chinyelugo  J.U. Etukokwu, who later became Oduah Ngu of Onitsha . Prior to his efforts, the Otu Odu was a private affair, accessible only to a select few women of character and affluence. However, under Etukokwu’s leadership, the society evolved into a prestigious institution with modernized rules and functions .

Etukokwu’s contributions have had a lasting impact on the Otu Odu society. He introduced the classic white uniform worn by members today, symbolizing purity and elegance. The society has since become a prominent socio-political and economic organization, empowering women and promoting cultural heritage in Onitsha and beyond.
