Onitsha is a major town linking the Eastern part of Nigeria with the Western part, divided by the Niger River. It occupies the northernmost point of the river which in the past was regularly navigable by large vessels, and has contributed to the role of Onitsha as a major center for trade between the coastal regions and the North; and between Eastern and Western regions of Nigeria
