Obi of Onitsha honoured with Nigerian Academy of letters fellowship
Lagos, August 14, 2025: His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, CFR, mni, Obi of Onitsha (Agbogidi), has been conferred with the prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) at the University of Lagos.
This esteemed recognition acknowledges Agbogidi’s outstanding contributions to scholarship, research, and the humanities. In his acceptance speech, Agbogidi humbly acknowledged the erudition of his fellow awardees and emphasized the vital role traditional councils play in national development. He challenged outdated notions that limit traditional rulers to ceremonial roles and highlighted pressing issues in Nigeria’s education sector, including insufficient funding, infrastructure deficits, and brain drain.
Agbogidi’s message was one of hope and determination, emphasizing the need to nurture human capacity through education. He pledged to advance the cause of the Academy and contribute to leaving a better nation for future generations.
