Ikporo Onitsha

Ikporo Onicha is a prestigious organization comprising wives and widows of Onitsha men. Historically, they played a vital role in:

1. Market Administration: Managing the Otu Nkwo Eze Onicha (Main Market) and reporting to the monarch.

2. Women’s Welfare: Overseeing the well-being, behavior, and discipline of women in the community.

3. Spiritual Responsibilities: Attending to the benevolent shrines and deities in the domain.

The Omu: A Symbol of Women’s Leadership

The Omu was the leader of Ikporo Onicha, appointed by the king for her exceptional leadership qualities and character. She held a distinguished position, dressing and attending events in a manner similar to the king. The Omu was not the king’s wife.

Historical Significance and Current Status

In 1886, Omu Nwagboka led a strike against Obi Anazonwu, and since her death, the position has remained vacant. Efforts are underway to restore the position. The involvement of the Onitsha Urban District Council and State Government in market administration and revenue collection from the 1950s onward has impacted Ikporo Onicha’s role. Nevertheless, they remain a vital voice in Onitsha’s traditional governance, particularly on women’s and spiritual matters. They continue to meet weekly under the Mgbedeme tree, a tradition that has endured for centuries
