The Federated Onitsha Age Grade Societies

The Federated Onitsha Age Grade Societies are a vital part of Onitsha’s governance and traditional political organization, dating back to pre-colonial times. There have been a total of 101 recorded since 1852. These societies are grouped by age and have various roles throughout their lives, including:

  • Public Duties: Village administration, safety, security, law and order, fighting social ills, and cultural activities.
  • Philanthropy: Engaging in welfare activities to benefit the community.

The Federated Age Grade Societies work under the umbrella of the “Ogbo So Achi Ani” (the ruling Age Grade), which collaborates with the Obi-in-Council to organize weekly traditional court sessions and enforce judgments and customs.

A key feature of the age grade system is the strong bond among members, who practice self-help and mutual support. This sense of kinship extends to their offspring, creating a large, close-knit family.
